Urban birding at Hull: around Setting Dyke

Since the lockdown started, I have been birding only within walking distance from home at west Hull. Today I walked around the Avenues, and then to St Ninians walk and Murrayfield Road to Setting Dyke and Bricknell playing fields. Under the railway bridge at Chanterlands Avenue, I heard the weak whistling begging calls of feral pigeon squabs. Two were visible in their nest, which had been set cosily amongst the anti-pigeon spikes. Little deters pigeons, and the beams under the bridge offer shelter and a lot of nesting space for the colony.

I had never taken this walk before, and I was very nicely surprised as I reached the Setting Dyke (top shot), as it was lined by grassy banks with large trees. The water was running, and there was some aquatic vegetation, and what looked like Water Vole burrows on the bank opposite.

More burrows and a close up of one.
