Walking Spurn Head to Filey Brigg

The Wolds Way comes to mind when you think about important walking routes in the east Riding of Yorkshire. But, there is a much more important way that doesn’t get dedicated chapter books with plenty of photos. This is the way that thousands of migratory birds of many species using the Atlantic flyway take when passing by Yorkshire: the coast of Holderness and the Flamborough headland. I live close to three fantastic bird observatories: Spurn Bird Observatory, Flamborough Bird Observatory and Filey Bird Observatory are all about an hour drive away, all of them on Yorkshire’s East coast and within Watsonian Vice-county VC61. For 2020 I am planning to walk from Spurn Head to Filey Brigg along the Holderness coast, starting at the beginning of the migration season in March and finishing for the Migration Festival at Filey at the end of October. I have divided the route into 20 stages, the longest 16 km, the shortest 8 km. The route will pass by the three bird observatories that document bird migration. Each walk blog post will feature a summer or winter migrant bird which uses the route and touch upon an interesting historical, geological or natural history issue. Of course I will be Birdtracking along the way!
