I take a long walk to South Wood garden centre via the Setting Dyke, Children's Wood and Willerby Carr Dyke and Wood Lane. On the way back I walk along the lane to Haltemprice. The best by far is a Kingfisher (51) at Setting Dyke by Cropton Playing fields. I see it again on the way back by Priory Road. It's hard to approach as I'm atop the dyke with nowhere to hide, so I only get distant shots.
Kingfisher, Setting Dyke.
Another highlight is Little Egret (52). They occasionally enter the city along Setting Dyke, which is relatively shallow and allows them to wade to fish sticklebacks. The one above, just by Priory Road, as the dyke enters a culvert, was walking and shaking its feet to disturb fish. At Garrowby Community orchard I have my first Song Thrush (53) and a fly-over Fieldfare (54).
Long-tailed Tit by the entrance of Garrowby Community Orchard.
A distant Redwing.
Female Bullfinch.
Pied Wagtail.
I follow the Setting Dyle across the fields to Willerby Carr Farm. Two Pied Wagtails and Black-headed Gulls are busy on the icy pools. Wood Lane is only a little muddy, a it is still freezing, but there are no Teal or Wigeon on the farm scrapes.
Kestrel
Pheasant.
Grey Heron.
Rook.
I walk across Cottingham and to Southwood Garden Centre cafe for a hot drink and lunch before heading back. The best is a Buzzard and a fly-over Lapwing. It is a bit warmer and it's very muddy and started to drizzle as I head towards Haltemprice Priory area. No sign of Skylark or Stonechat today.
Buzzard.
Lapwing.
Little Egret.
Kingfisher, probably the same one, but this time by Priory Road.
