Linnets, Jackdaws and Jays at Jack Kaye fields

On Monday night, 3rd of March, just as I was settling to sleep I heard a Tawny Owl calling (number 80 of my 100 bird species in Hull challenge). Today, I took an early morning walk around the avenues and Jack Kaye field before work. Song Thrushes are in song, maybe two males about. I'm very pleased to flush two Jays (number 81), which appeared to be retrieving acorns. The next species in the challenge are likely to be summer migrants, and Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps are the earliest ones, with some individuals overwintering in Hull, although I haven't seen any this year. A pair of Linnets tweet from the central scrub and two Jackdaws inspect chimney pots. I take a detour around Northern Cemetery, which adds to the morning chorus with Mistle Thrush, Redwing, Stock Dove and a drumming Great Spotted Woodpecker. Altogether a very productive day!
